Foreword

In the 70s and 80s of the last century, Professor Jao Tsung-i visited museums in the northwestern China and appreciated Han bricks with auspicious words unearthed. From these “artistic characters” of the Han dynasty, he further developed a unique official script style of his own and started to produce calligraphic strip panels and couplets until the early 21st century. In addition to calligraphic works, Professor Jao inscribed his flower paintings, especially lotus ones, with this type of script. Among the works executed in the manner of “Jao’s Lotus” created during his late years, auspicious lotus is deemed one of the special categories.

In the beginning of 2019, Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of The University of Hong Kong organizes “Every Day is a Good Day - Exhibition of Professor Jao Tsung-i’s Auspicious Artworks” to display Professor Jao’s auspicious flower and fruit paintings, calligraphy, and studio objects. Through these exhibits with propitious meanings, may the Year of the Pig bring everyone success, well-being, good fortune, and happiness.
